Huge Immersive Exhibition Brings Ancient Pompeii to Life

Canberra: The National Museum is hosting a fascinating exhibition about Pompeii, the ancient city that met its fate nearly 2000 years ago. It opens this Saturday and promises to be quite the experience.
They’ve put together a mix of soundscapes and huge digital displays, along with over 90 artifacts that really bring the city to life. It’s the first time this multimedia show is being seen in the Southern Hemisphere, so it’s a big deal!
The exhibition takes you back to the day before the eruption, showcasing what daily life was like in Pompeii. You’ll see everything from archaeological finds to the dramatic moment when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.
Curator Lily Withycombe mentioned that the exhibition connects the artifacts with the real stories of the people who lived there. She believes Pompeii is still a “living, breathing city” in a way.
While the eruption was devastating, it also preserved many aspects of life back then. The multimedia experience allows visitors to really feel like they’re walking through ancient Pompeii.
You’ll find reconstructions of streets and homes, plus replica casts of those who tragically lost their lives, including adults, a child, and even a dog. It’s a poignant reminder of that time.
Visitors can also admire beautiful frescoes, monuments, and everyday items like jewelry and cookware. These artifacts give us a glimpse into the lives of those who lived almost two millennia ago.
The exhibition runs until May 4, 2025, so there’s plenty of time to check it out. It’s a unique chance to walk through both ancient and modern Pompeii, along with an excavation site.
