Huddersfield: James Wilton, just 18, left college to join fighters in Ukraine. He wanted to help those suffering from the war, despite his family’s concerns.
In July, James was killed in a drone attack while crossing open ground. He had a heavy pack on his back and couldn’t be saved, even with his friend Jason’s help.
His father, Graham, shared that James had just turned 18 when he decided to volunteer. They talked about it a lot, and Graham wanted to ensure James was prepared for what lay ahead.
Graham took James to the airport for his flight to Krakow. He encouraged James to talk to his mother and sisters, who were against his decision. But James was determined to go, and Graham supported him.
Jason, an American volunteer, recounted how they were 20 meters apart when James froze after spotting a Russian drone. They tried to run for cover, but James was fatally wounded by one of the drones.
When Jason went back to help, another drone hovered above him, making him fear for his life. Luckily, it flew away without attacking. Jason later suffered serious injuries from a mine.
Graham traveled 1,800 miles to Ukraine for his son’s funeral. He described it as the hardest thing he ever did. He spent two weeks in Kyiv with James’ comrades, forming lasting friendships.
