How to Identify ‘Real Flu’ Symptoms as Top GP Warns of Severe Cases
Flu cases are surging, with top GP highlighting symptoms that can leave you bedridden
Greater Manchester, UK, Flu, Symptoms, Dr Helen Wall
Greater Manchester: Flu cases are on the rise, and it’s getting serious. Hospitals are seeing a surge in patients, and it’s not just a little bump. We’re talking about a significant increase compared to last year.
Dr. Helen Wall, a GP in Bolton, mentioned that in early December, hospital admissions for flu shot up by 360%. That’s a staggering number! It seems like this winter could be one of the worst flu seasons we’ve seen.
Right now, about 4,469 patients are in hospitals across England with flu. That’s five times more than last year. In Greater Manchester alone, the numbers are alarming, with nearly three times as many patients compared to the same time last year.
Dr. Wall pointed out that flu symptoms can hit you hard and fast. You might feel fine one moment, then suddenly feel feverish and achy. Unlike a regular cold, real flu can knock you out completely. You’ll be stuck in bed, struggling to get up.
She also noted that with Covid, people might just have a mild cough and carry on with their day. But with flu, it’s a whole different ball game. You really feel it, and it can be tough.
There are some serious signs to watch for, too. If you’re having trouble breathing, feeling super dehydrated, or getting really confused, it’s time to seek help. These are the reasons people end up in the hospital.
Dr. Wall explained that the flu vaccine isn’t perfect. It doesn’t cover every strain, and many people haven’t gotten vaccinated this year. The uptake has been lower than desired, especially among those under 65 who are at risk.
So, if you haven’t gotten your flu shot yet, it might be a good idea to consider it. The flu is changing all the time, and it can hit hard. Stay safe out there!
