Pembrokeshire: So, there’s some buzz about a housing plan for that old military camp in Penally. You know, the one that was used for asylum seekers a while back? Well, it looks like they’re thinking of turning it into homes now.
This camp has been around since 1860, but it really made headlines when it was used to house asylum seekers between late 2020 and early 2021. It wasn’t exactly a pleasant place, with lots of complaints about the living conditions.
At one point, there were around 250 asylum seekers living there, and let me tell you, it wasn’t pretty. People were protesting both inside and outside the camp, and there were even arrests made. It was a real mess.
After the last of the asylum seekers left, the camp was handed back to the Ministry of Defence. It closed down in late 2022 and was put up for sale the next year. Now, it seems like there’s a chance for a fresh start.
There’s been an application submitted for a residential redevelopment of the site, and it’s currently being processed by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park planners. They’ve got their work cut out for them!
It’ll be interesting to see how this all unfolds. The community is definitely watching closely, and there’s a lot of hope for a better future for that site.
