Huddersfield: Exciting news is brewing in Huddersfield! Plans are moving forward to turn a historic building in the town center into new homes. This iconic spot is set to get a makeover, and it’s happening soon.

The Estate Buildings, which are Grade II* Listed, are right by the train station and the George Hotel. The council has big dreams for this place as part of their ‘Blueprint’ vision for the town. They admit it’s a bit tricky and pricey to convert because of its age and heritage, but they’re optimistic. With some fresh funding, they hope to make it more appealing for developers.

Kirklees Council just scored £1.25 million from a government fund aimed at transforming unused land and buildings into homes. This cash will help with essential work like internal demolitions and repairs, getting the building ready for future development.

But there’s a catch! The council has to get the work started by March 31, 2025, and they need to have a contract for the homes by March 31, 2028. If they don’t meet these deadlines, they might have to pay back some or all of the grant.

On Tuesday, January 21, the Cabinet will discuss accepting this funding. Councillor Graham Turner, who’s in charge of Finance & Regeneration, is excited about the project. He believes it’s a fantastic way to preserve Huddersfield’s history while making it a better place to live.

He expressed gratitude for the investment, emphasizing that it’s crucial for restoring historic buildings. This funding is a strong vote of confidence in their plans to revitalize the town center, making it a vibrant spot for everyone, especially the younger crowd.

With these developments, Huddersfield is on track to become a lively place to live, work, and enjoy life, with plenty of amenities close by. Sounds like a win-win for the community!
