Households May Receive Two Extra Wheelie Bins in £8m Waste Overhaul
A proposed £8m overhaul could provide households with two additional wheelie bins for improved waste collection and recycling.
North Yorkshire, Waste Collection, Recycling, Councillor Greg White
Malton: So, there’s some big news about waste collection in North Yorkshire. The council is planning to shake things up a bit. Right now, each area has its own way of doing things, thanks to the old borough and district councils. But with the new unitary authority kicking in last year, they’re looking to standardize the process.
The idea is to follow what Selby is doing. They want to switch to a system where recycling is picked up every other week. One week for paper and card, and the next for glass and cans. Sounds pretty straightforward, right?
For those using boxes and bags for recycling, they’ll get two shiny new 240-litre wheelie bins instead. And don’t worry, non-recyclable waste will still be collected every two weeks, along with garden waste.
If you sign up for the green waste collection, you could end up with four wheelie bins outside your home. That’s a lot of bins! The council believes this new setup will boost recycling rates and cut down on collection costs, all while helping the environment.
They’ve crunched the numbers and it’s going to cost around £8 million to roll this out. But they think it could save over £500,000 a year in the long run. Councillor Greg White mentioned that residents want better value and improved recycling options.
He also pointed out that this new model could be more efficient and fair, giving everyone in North Yorkshire the same service. However, they know that one size doesn’t fit all. Some areas might still need bags and boxes instead of bins.
They’re open to customizing the service, like using smaller bins or more frequent collections if needed. After consulting with residents, it seems people prefer wheelie bins over boxes and bags, which is good to know.
If everything goes according to plan, they’ll start rolling out these changes in Malton this summer, with a full rollout over the next couple of years. The council’s executive committee is set to vote on this next Tuesday, so fingers crossed!
Oh, and last month, they decided to standardize the colors of the new wheelie bins. Each color will represent the type of waste it’s meant for. It’s all about making things clearer for everyone.
