PALM SHORES: A tragic incident unfolded Saturday evening when a fire broke out in a rental home. Sadly, a woman was found dead inside.

The flames erupted around 5 p.m. in the 1800 block of Elm Drive, just north of Melbourne. Fire crews from Brevard County quickly arrived and extinguished the fire. However, they couldn’t identify the woman right away.

The home, which was completely gutted, belonged to Crystal Bankston and her mother. Friends set up a GoFundMe to help, and it’s already raised over $1,100.

The state fire marshal is investigating what caused the fire, but it’s still unclear if foul play is involved. James Falvey, the landlord, mentioned that Crystal’s mother is heartbroken over the loss.

The home is now a total loss, and the investigation continues.
