Whitehaven: A house that was severely damaged in a suspected gas explosion is going to be torn down. The council has confirmed this decision.
This incident happened on New Year’s Eve on Hugh Street in Bransty. Along with the main house, a neighboring property will also see some demolition work.
Three people were hurt badly and taken to the hospital. Thankfully, their conditions are now critical but stable.
Residents living nearby had to evacuate, and 11 of them are currently getting temporary housing from the council.
The council held a meeting with residents right after the explosion and had another one just recently. They made sure other agencies were there to help out too.
Over the weekend, the council worked hard to clear the area of cars and debris. They finished that up on Sunday.
They’ve also completed a structural assessment of the buildings affected, and the area is still blocked off for safety.
Residents have been told that some demolition work is necessary. Number 28 Hugh Street will be fully demolished, while number 27 will only be partially taken down. The council plans to start this work as soon as they can.
A spokesperson for the council mentioned they’ll keep in touch with residents to provide updates and will help them return home when it’s safe.
Welfare and emergency housing support is still being offered by Cumberland Council to those affected.
