Toronto: The Netflix Christmas movie Hot Frosty has become a holiday favorite this year, featuring Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan. Sarah DeSouza-Coelho, a Canadian actress, plays Nicole, a diner employee owned by Kathy (Chabert). She was drawn to the script because it’s quirky and filled with Christmas magic.

DeSouza-Coelho mentioned that the story about small-town love resonates with everyone. “My mom watches these movies all year round,” she said. “It’s comforting no matter the season.”

She also had a total “fan girl moment” when she found out she’d be working with stars like Chabert, Joe Lo Truglio, and Craig Robinson. “I freaked out in the best way possible,” she recalled, excited to work with actors she admired.

Despite her initial nerves, she enjoyed chatting with them and was inspired by their professionalism. “It was surreal to see how confident they were on set,” she said.

Growing up, DeSouza-Coelho looked up to Hilary Duff, but now she admires Issa Rae. She’s also working on her own projects, including the digital series Back to One, which she calls the “silver lining” of the pandemic.

“The film industry shut down, and it made me rethink my career and the roles I wanted,” she explained. As a first-generation Guyanese artist, she felt a lack of representation and decided to create her own leading role.

Back to One is a six-episode dramedy about a young Guyanese-Canadian actress who leaves her day job to chase her dreams, only to face unexpected challenges.

DeSouza-Coelho appreciates the support for artists in Canada but believes more can be done. “There are great grant programs, but we need more help for emerging creators,” she said.

She feels larger organizations should consider how they can support the next generation of filmmakers. Her journey reflects the changing landscape of entertainment consumption.

“People are watching more on their phones now, whether it’s YouTube or TikTok,” she noted. “This shift benefits young filmmakers trying to share their work.”

Whether acting or creating her own projects, Sarah DeSouza-Coelho is definitely a Canadian talent to watch.
