Humber: The local NHS is really feeling the pressure right now. Hospitals, GP practices, and ambulance services are swamped with patients due to a spike in flu and other winter bugs.

They’re calling it a “quad-demic” with flu, norovirus, COVID, and RSV all hitting hard. Right now, there are about 280 flu patients in hospitals, which is a whopping eight times more than last year. Fourteen of those are in critical care.

Emergency Departments are super busy, and some Trusts are on high alert. They’re asking folks with flu or norovirus symptoms to stay away unless it’s absolutely necessary. It’s all about keeping everyone safe.

People are being encouraged to wear face coverings in certain areas to help stop the spread of these winter viruses. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference.

Hospitals are worried that many people are showing up at Emergency Departments when they really don’t need to be there. This can put vulnerable patients at risk, so they’re asking everyone to think twice before heading in.

If you do need to go to the hospital, make sure to wash your hands regularly and wear a mask. It’s all about keeping the germs at bay.

York and Scarborough hospitals are also asking for support. They want patients to come alone if possible since space is tight right now.

The NHS estimates that a lot of A&E visits could be avoided or handled better elsewhere. They’re urging everyone to help free up space for those who really need it.

Dr. Nigel Wells from the NHS in Humber and North Yorkshire said that staff are working hard to keep patients safe, but it’s tough with the current demand.

He advises that if it’s a serious emergency, call 999. But if you’re unsure, it’s better to contact NHS 111 first. Your GP or local pharmacy might also be able to help.

Just a heads up, if you do go to an Emergency Department, be prepared for a long wait. It’s frustrating, but the staff are doing their best in these challenging times.

Flu cases are skyrocketing, with nearly 5,500 reported daily in England. On top of that, hospitals are still dealing with COVID, RSV, and norovirus cases.

Many hospitals and ambulance trusts have declared critical incidents recently to manage the extra demand.

With the cold weather hitting Humber and North Yorkshire, there are concerns that things could get even tougher.

Dr. Wells also mentioned that low temperatures can be risky for vulnerable people, so it’s important to stay warm and have enough medication on hand.

Even though the national vaccination booking system has closed, eligible folks can still get vaccinated at walk-in sites or pharmacies.
