It all happened on May 30, 2023, on the B4333. The court heard that Gareth was trying to impress a girl when he crashed into an oncoming car. The judge didn’t hold back, calling his driving “utterly ridiculous.”
Gareth was speeding around a sharp bend when the other driver saw him coming and tried to avoid the collision. Unfortunately, it was too late, and the impact was heavy, causing significant damage to both cars.
The driver of the other car initially refused medical help but later went to the hospital with whiplash and a bleed on the brain. His injuries were serious, and he had to stay in the hospital for observation.
Gareth’s passenger also suffered severe injuries, including a lacerated liver and a fractured vertebra. She had to wear a back brace for three months. She mentioned that Gareth’s reckless driving was out of character for him, and she had even asked him to slow down.
Both victims shared how the crash affected their lives. The driver now feels anxious on the road and struggles with PTSD. He mentioned that simple tasks like DIY and playing snooker have become difficult for him.
Gareth, now 19, had only passed his driving test three months before the crash. He admitted to speeding and acknowledged that it was excessive for his experience level. He was also injured in the crash and spent 17 days in the hospital.
In court, the judge pointed out that young drivers often treat cars like toys, putting others at risk. He decided on an 18-month suspended sentence for Gareth, along with community service and a driving ban for three years.
The judge emphasized that Gareth’s age played a significant role in his sentencing, and he must now complete a rehabilitation course before he can drive again.
