Horden: A man named Elijah Hind got himself into serious trouble after he barged into a home and attacked the resident. It all started when the victim refused to buy something from Hind’s accomplice, Tammy Hedley. In a fit of anger, Hind pulled out a knife, which was pretty big, about 9 inches long.
The court heard that the victim knew Hedley because she had sold him stuff before. Once inside the house, Hind demanded money and started shaking the victim’s trousers, which were on the floor. In the chaos, the victim’s phone and bank cards fell out, and Hind quickly grabbed them.
Things escalated when Hind poked the victim with the knife, leaving marks on his shirt. The victim tried to push the knife away, but Hind spotted the car keys on the kitchen counter and took them. As he was leaving, he hit the victim with something hard, possibly a walking stick or a metal bar, which caused a nasty cut on his head.
The poor guy was knocked out for a bit and woke up on the floor, confused. Hind and Hedley then took off in the victim’s car, but they didn’t get far. A witness saw them arguing after they parked and called the police.
When the cops arrived, they found the car and some of the victim’s bank cards inside. Unfortunately, the stolen phone was never found. The police recognized Hind and Hedley from the CCTV footage and arrested them nearby.
The 68-year-old victim ended up in the hospital with head injuries, but thankfully, he didn’t need stitches. He had to stay in the hospital for two days because of concerns about his heart rate and blood pressure after the attack.
After the incident, the victim felt scared in his own home and took extra security measures, like installing cameras. Losing his car also caused him a lot of hassle, as he had to pay a locksmith to get back in.
Initially charged with robbery, Hind, who is 24 and from Horden, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary. Hedley, also 24, admitted to handling stolen goods and taking a vehicle without permission.
Hind’s lawyer mentioned that his client’s drug and alcohol problems led to the crime. Hind expressed regret and wanted to apologize to the victim. He’s been trying to get help in prison to turn his life around.
Hedley’s lawyer pointed out that her past offenses were mostly shoplifting, and during the incident, she was trying to stop Hind from being violent. The judge noted that Hind’s aggression caused the victim a lot of stress.
In the end, Hind was sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison, while Hedley received a four-week sentence, which meant she could be released immediately due to time served.
