Hopes of unveiling Catterick Bridge memorial in February

Catterick Bridge: Back in February 1944, a munitions depot near the railway station exploded, causing a tragic disaster. Twelve people lost their lives, and over a hundred were injured. It was a chaotic scene that left the area in ruins.

Just days before the explosion, soldiers were busy moving ammunition for the upcoming D-Day landings. Witnesses reported that the crates were being handled roughly, which was concerning.

Then, out of nowhere, a loud bang shook the ground. Six trucks loaded with anti-tank grenades went off, triggering a massive chain reaction of incendiary bombs.

The destruction was immense. The Railway Hotel, several homes, and a café were completely wiped out. It was a grim day, with six civilians and six servicemen losing their lives.

Among the fallen were four soldiers whose remains were only found as fragments. It was a heartbreaking event that left a mark on the community.

Fast forward to today, and local resident Stephen Irvine is working hard to create a memorial to honor those who perished. He hopes to unveil it on February 4, the anniversary of the explosion.

Stephen reached out to the Brompton-on-Swale Parish Council for support and even got backing from MP Rishi Sunak. He’s been passionate about this project, wanting to ensure the victims are remembered.

Rishi Sunak expressed his support, emphasizing the importance of commemorating those who lost their lives in such a tragic event. He believes it’s crucial to keep their memory alive.

Stephen, a veteran with a keen interest in military history, was surprised by how little people knew about the 1944 disaster. He felt it was his duty to change that.

The Parish Council has been supportive since Stephen first contacted them. They’re working with North Yorkshire Council to make the memorial a reality.

They’re aiming for the unveiling to coincide with the anniversary, and they want the community to be involved in this important event.
