Sydney: It’s been a tough time for the Jewish community in Sydney. Just recently, vandals hit another synagogue in the inner west. This happened right after swastikas were sprayed on the Southern Sydney Synagogue in Allawah.
Early Saturday morning, police got a call about a home on Henry St in Queens Park that was covered in graffiti. It was around 6:30 AM when they arrived.
Things escalated quickly. Just an hour later, they found out that the Newtown Synagogue on Georgina St had also been vandalized. It’s really upsetting to see this happening.
There were also offensive comments found on a poster in Marrickville, which police think is a different incident altogether. A spokesperson for the NSW Police said they’re looking into all these incidents.
They emphasized that hate crimes are taken very seriously and urged anyone who sees or experiences such acts to report them. It’s crucial for the community and police to work together to keep NSW safe.
George Foster, the president of the Southern Sydney Synagogue, expressed how distressing this vandalism is for the Jewish community. He mentioned that it creates a lot of uncertainty and fear.
Earlier on Friday, police discovered swastikas and anti-Semitic slurs on the Southern Sydney Synagogue while they were on patrol. Premier Chris Minns called this a “monstrous act” and condemned the vandalism.
He described the attack as horrifying and filled with hate, stressing that it’s meant to divide the community. Minns made it clear that this kind of behavior is completely unacceptable.
He also pointed out that this vandalism is close to his home, and he knows the people in his community reject such acts of violence and hatred.
