Usk: The ceremonies took place at County Hall and Caldicot Hub. They marked the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz-Birkenau’s liberation.

On January 27, Monmouthshire County Council held a ceremony. It included readings and poems from local leaders like Paul Griffiths and Su McConnel.

The Lord Lieutenant of Gwent and mayors from Caldicot, Abergavenny, and Monmouth were present. Representatives from the Royal British Legion also attended.

Councillor Angela Sandles spoke about taking action for a better future. She emphasized the importance of fighting prejudice and persecution.

The event also remembered victims of recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

Another memorial event happened in Caldicot Hub on January 30. It featured films and readings from Bosnian genocide survivors.

This year marks 30 years since the Bosnian genocide began in 1995. The ceremony also included presentations for Auschwitz-Birkenau’s liberation anniversary.

Monmouthshire MP Catherine Fookes attended the Caldicot event, showing support for the cause.
