Port Vila: This Christmas is going to be tough for Vanuatu. The recent earthquake has left families in shock and struggling to cope. It’s hard to believe this was once a vibrant holiday destination.
Australia is stepping in with aid, sending over millions in support and medical teams to help the affected areas. The capital, Port Vila, is now a shadow of its former self, with many buildings collapsed and people displaced.
Save the Children is on the ground, distributing aid to those in need. The situation is dire, and the local director, Lavinia Mahit-Wasinabani, shared how the holiday spirit is overshadowed by sadness and gratitude.
She mentioned that while the world celebrates, many in Vanuatu are just trying to get through the day. The earthquake, which measured 7.3 on the Richter scale, has caused significant loss, with at least 14 lives claimed and many more injured.
Families like Merelyn’s are facing unimaginable challenges. Her home was torn apart, leaving her and her children in a precarious situation. She described the moment the quake hit, thinking it was just another tremor until it became clear how serious it was.
Her son Peter was terrified, holding onto his baby brother as the ground shook. Thankfully, they managed to escape just in time. Now, they’re living in makeshift tents, unsure of what the future holds.
With more aftershocks hitting the area, the government has declared a state of emergency. Australia has pledged $7 million in aid, and support teams will remain in Vanuatu during this challenging festive season.
It’s a tough time for everyone, but the resilience of the Vanuatu people shines through as they come together to support one another.
