Hitchin man gets suspended term after Euro 2024 killing

Hitchin: A tragic incident unfolded after a Euro 2024 match when Oscar Jackson, 21, punched Grant Wallendorf, 45, leading to Wallendorf’s death. The two had been at Ickleford Sports and Recreation Club, enjoying the game together. After the match, things escalated in the parking lot, resulting in a fatal blow.

Jackson was found guilty of manslaughter but cleared of murder. He received a two-year suspended sentence and must complete 300 hours of community service. The judge noted that Jackson acted out of fear, believing he was about to be attacked. However, he emphasized that the force used was excessive.

Witnesses reported that both men had been drinking that evening. Wallendorf had consumed nine pints, while Jackson had two pints and a double vodka. The incident was captured on CCTV, showing Wallendorf gesturing towards Jackson before the punch was thrown.

Wallendorf’s family expressed their devastation over his loss, describing it as a “catastrophic” event that left a significant void in their lives. The judge acknowledged the tragedy of the situation and decided against prison time, citing overcrowding and Jackson’s lack of intent to cause harm.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Gardner remarked on the senselessness of the argument that led to such a tragic outcome, highlighting the need for better conflict resolution in similar situations.
