Cairns: So, Anthony Albanese is hitting the road for his pre-election campaign. He’s kicking things off with a tour through Queensland, the Northern Territory, and Western Australia. It’s all unofficial for now, but the buzz is that the election could be called by May 17.
First stop? A remote Indigenous community called Alpurrurulam, which is a bit of a trek from Mount Isa. He’s got his sights set on winning over voters, especially in the Leichhardt seat, which is currently held by a retiring Liberal MP.
Just the other day, he was at the Cairns Police Citizens Youth Club, where he had a great time chatting with some kids. It’s all about connecting with the community, right? And Labor is really hoping their candidate, Matt Smith, can make a splash in Leichhardt.
In the Northern Territory, things are a bit trickier. Labor is trying to hold onto two federal seats after a tough loss to the Country Liberal Party in the territory elections. The stakes are high!
With the cost of living being a hot topic, Albanese is asking voters to think about Australia’s future. He’s also defending the government’s efforts to help households cope with rising expenses.
And as he gears up for a trip to Western Australia, there are calls from Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young for him to prioritize environmental issues. She’s not too happy about a shelved deal for a federal environment protection agency from last year.
