San Francisco: Buddy Hield’s journey in the NBA has been quite the ride. He recalls some unusual advice from a general manager who told him to think of himself as someone who might bounce around the league. It’s a mixed bag, really. Being traded means teams want you, but it also means the one you’re leaving is okay with letting you go. Everyone wants to feel valued, right?
Now in his ninth season and first with the Warriors, Hield has experienced both sides of that coin. He describes the NBA as a roller coaster, saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” It’s a perspective he’s adopted after being drafted sixth overall by the New Orleans Pelicans in 2016, only to be traded just months later.
His time with the Pelicans was short-lived. He was part of a big trade to get DeMarcus Cousins from the Kings. Hield spent six seasons in Sacramento, which was the longest he’s stayed with any team. He had some great moments there, like being named Rookie of the Month and making the All-Rookie First Team. But then, he was traded again, this time to the Indiana Pacers.
Hield has been through three multi-year contracts and four trades. He’s learned to keep his emotions in check. “Sometimes it stings, but you can’t dwell on it,” he says. He feels lucky to still be in the league, especially since so many are trying to break in. With only 450 spots available, it’s tough to get in and even tougher to stay.
Looking back, Hield feels pride rather than anger. He’s grateful for where he is now. If he could talk to his younger self on draft night, he’d say, “Way to stay the course.” He knows hard work got him here, and it’ll keep him going. The journey is what he loves most about the game.
Change is always around the corner. Hield knows he could be traded again, but he’s ready for whatever comes next. “It’s a new challenge every day,” he says. Embracing the unknown has become one of his strengths, just like his shooting. No matter the ups and downs, he keeps a smile on his face.
So, here’s to Buddy Hield and his wild NBA ride. It’s all about the journey, and he’s enjoying every moment of it.
