Hemel Hempstead: Jason Higgins, 38, was found guilty of serious crimes. He faced charges of controlling behavior, two counts of rape, and assault. This followed an 11-day trial last October.

On January 27, Judge Bal Dhaliwal-Thomas sentenced him to 17 years in prison. He also received a 20-year restraining order to keep him away from his victim. Higgins will be on the sexual offenders register for life.

The court heard that Higgins controlled his victim during their brief relationship. He dictated her clothing and demanded she answer his calls at all times.

One night, he violently attacked her while she slept, causing bruises. When she tried to end the relationship, he bombarded her with calls and threats.

Higgins was also convicted of two rapes that occurred during their relationship. The judge highlighted his manipulative behavior and constant monitoring of her.

Detective Constable Sue Holmes from the Domestic Abuse and Safeguarding Unit said the victim feels relief knowing Higgins is in prison. However, the trauma from his actions will last a lifetime.

She urged anyone experiencing similar abuse to reach out for help. The unit is dedicated to supporting victims of coercive control and sexual assault. Taking that first step can be tough, but they are ready to listen and protect those in need.
