The Moon

The moon will go through several phases this February. The new moon is on January 29. The first quarter happens on February 5. The full moon will shine bright on February 12. Finally, the third quarter is on February 20. This full moon is called the ‘snow moon’ because of the cold weather.

The Planets and Stars

Six planets will be visible in the sky until late February. Look for Saturn, Venus, Neptune, Uranus, Jupiter, and Mars after sunset. Saturn, Venus, and Jupiter will shine as bright white points. Mercury will also become visible later in the month.

Galaxy Season

February marks the start of ‘galaxy season’ in the Northern Hemisphere. This is the best time to spot distant galaxies filled with gas, dust, and stars. A favorite target is the Andromeda Galaxy, our closest galactic neighbor, about 2.5 million light years away. Stargazers should find a dark spot to use a telescope or binoculars. In very dark skies, you can even see it with the naked eye as a small smudge.
