Fleetwood: Kiena Dawes’ mother, Angela, opened up about the heartbreaking impact of her daughter’s death on her young granddaughter. Kiena, just 23, tragically took her own life after enduring years of abuse from her partner, Ryan Wellings.

Wellings, 30, was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison for his actions. He was found guilty of assaulting Kiena but cleared of unlawful killing. Kiena left behind a note, calling Wellings a “monster” who had “killed me.”

In court, Angela shared how Kiena’s daughter is struggling to understand her mother’s absence. She said, “Her daughter has already asked me where her Mummy is. I have found it impossible to answer that question.”

Angela described Kiena as a “rare gem,” full of love and kindness. She said, “Kiena is missed so much every second of every day.” Since Kiena’s death on July 22, 2022, Angela has been caring for her granddaughter.

Angela recalled the moment when police came to her home after Kiena’s death. She stated, “Ryan Wellings killed my baby, and I will fight for her justice.” She expressed her hope that no other young woman or child would have to endure what Kiena did.

Kiena, a hairdresser from Fleetwood, had been in a tumultuous relationship with Wellings since January 2020. Their relationship quickly escalated, with Wellings tattooing Kiena’s name on his body just a week after they met.

Despite a proposal on a beach, the relationship turned abusive. Kiena faced physical violence, including being dragged by her hair and suffering injuries while pregnant. Wellings manipulated her, threatening her with the loss of her child if she spoke out.

On July 11, 2022, he violently attacked her, leading to her tragic decision to take her own life just days later. The case has raised concerns, with three Lancashire Police officers facing disciplinary hearings.
