Toronto: We finally have some good news to share about winter! After all the talk about snow squalls and freezing temps, the sunsets are back after 5 p.m.
This change kicks in on January 10, and it’s been over 60 days since we last saw those late sunsets in November. It’s like a little gift as we move into the new year.
Remember the winter solstice on December 21? That was the darkest day of the year. But now, starting Friday, the sunsets will get later and later as we inch closer to spring.
In fact, during the second week of January, Toronto will gain 12 minutes of daylight. Meanwhile, Miami is only getting six minutes. High latitudes like ours really make up for lost time as we head toward the spring equinox.
And it’s not just us! Up north in Tuktoyaktuk, N.W.T., they’ll see the sun rise again on February 13 after being in the dark since November 27.
Right now, we’re enjoying a break from the stormy weather, even if it’s still chilly. But don’t get too comfy; we might see a more active weather pattern later this month.
The coldest weather will shift back west, and a milder pattern will eventually make its way to the eastern U.S. This means Texas and Colorado could see some weather changes that affect the Great Lakes region.
With insights from Kevin MacKay, a meteorologist at The Weather Network, it’s clear that we’re in for some interesting times ahead.
