Grampians National Park: So, there’s been a bit of a drama in Victoria lately. A bunch of bushfires have been raging through the park, and while the firefighters are doing their best, some rangers got a surprise from the sky.

They spotted a mob of southern brush-tailed rock wallabies that everyone thought were gone for good. Only four have been confirmed alive so far, but fingers crossed there are more out there!

Now, the authorities are hustling to get food to these little guys since their home got pretty wrecked. They’re at risk of starving, and it’s a race against time to help them out.

Charlie Richardson, the chief ranger, said they’re focused on getting food and supplements to the wallabies. He mentioned that these critters can be pretty smart when it comes to dodging danger, but they need a helping hand now.

It’s a big deal because there are less than 100 of these wallabies left in the wild in Victoria. The food packages they’re sending include veggies and special pellets, which are super important for keeping them alive.

These wallabies were brought to the park back in 2008 to help save them from going extinct, and now, with the fires, they’re facing a tough time again.

Charlie also pointed out that feral pests like foxes and cats are a huge threat to these wallabies. They’ve been working on a monitoring and predator control program for years to help them out.

When the news broke about the wallabies being alive, people were relieved. One person even called it “brilliant.”

Now, bushfires are pretty common in Australia during summer, but this one, sparked by lightning, is still out of control. The park is closed to the public, and the fire has burned an area as big as Singapore!

There’s another fire that started recently, and it’s already taken out some properties. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited the area and called it a “devastating fire event.”

He reminded everyone that Australia has always had fires, but they’re happening more often and getting worse.
