Wigan: So, Kraft Heinz is making some big moves to go green! They just got the green light for a £7.2 million heat pump project at their factory in Wigan. This place is a major hub for their famous tinned foods, like those beloved Heinz Baked Beanz.
With around 850 folks working there, it’s one of the largest food factories in Europe. The plan is to switch up how they heat water for cooking those beans and spaghetti hoops. Instead of relying on fossil fuels, they’ll use heat pumps to recycle waste heat from the factory itself. Pretty cool, right?
This change is expected to lower emissions and save some cash, which means they can invest more in other projects. The government is chipping in £2.5 million from its Industrial Energy Transformation Fund, and Heinz is adding nearly £5 million of its own money.
Saji Jacob, who heads up the supply chain in Western Europe for Heinz, mentioned that this funding is a game-changer for their biggest plant. It’s a big step towards their goal of reaching Net Zero emissions.
Last year, they also announced plans for a £40 million hydrogen plant at the same site, which could produce more than half of the gas they need. It’s all part of their ongoing effort to cut down on carbon emissions.
The government is backing 25 projects across the UK with a total of £51.9 million to help businesses reduce their carbon footprints. Other companies in the North West are also getting support, like Novelis in Warrington, which is working on a big expansion to cut emissions significantly.
Even the Stanlow energy cluster in Cheshire is getting in on the action, with several projects aimed at carbon capture and low-carbon hydrogen. It’s all about making a cleaner future while keeping jobs and the economy strong.
Sarah Jones, the Minister for Industry, emphasized that this plan is about moving away from fossil fuels and towards clean, homegrown energy. It’s a win-win for businesses and consumers alike, as it could lead to lower prices while helping the environment.
So, it looks like Heinz is not just about tasty food anymore; they’re also stepping up to be part of the solution for a greener planet!
