London: A new report says Heathrow’s third runway will boost the economy by just £8.80 per person each year. This research was commissioned by the SNP.

The analysis from the House of Commons predicts a £17.1 billion increase in UK GDP by 2050. This is based on the airport’s expansion plans.

Over 25 years, this adds up to £220 per person, assuming the UK population reaches 77 million by 2050. SNP Deputy Leader Pete Wishart criticized Labour, saying they lack solutions for Brexit challenges.

However, some Nationalists support the expansion. Fergus Ewing believes the new runway will help Scottish exports reach global markets.

Labour’s Chancellor Rachel Reeves claimed the runway would benefit Scotch whisky and salmon exports. Both industries welcomed this news, especially since salmon is Heathrow’s top export.

Wishart downplayed the runway’s benefits, stating that Reeves’ economic plan mainly focuses on England. He emphasized that the policy’s value is only £8.80 per person.

He urged Labour to recognize that recovery requires access to the Single Market, a stance the SNP has consistently advocated.

Wishart also pointed out that Labour has cut significant funding for Scotland, including £800 million for supercomputers and £1 billion for carbon capture.

He concluded that if the third runway is Labour’s best offer, it shows a lack of solutions for Brexit issues. The SNP calls for a sensible approach and a return to the Single Market.

The UK Government has been asked for a comment.
