Syracuse, New York, Car Theft, Police Mistake, Handcuffed Child
Syracuse: So, this really sad thing happened. An 11-year-old girl was handcuffed by police after they mistook her for a car thief. It all went down while she was just walking home from school.
The police were looking for a girl who had been joyriding in a stolen car. They spotted this girl, who happened to be wearing similar clothes to the suspect, just five blocks from where the car was dumped.
Can you imagine? They handcuffed her right there in the street. She was clearly shocked and upset. Her cousin was filming the whole thing, trying to keep things light by joking around.
Her cousin even tried to convince the officers they had the wrong person. They showed the deputies a photo of the real suspect, who looked totally different. But it took a while for the officers to realize their mistake.
After about seven minutes of questioning, they finally let her go. They apologized, saying she matched the description too closely. But still, it’s just heartbreaking.
The sheriff’s office defended their actions, saying it’s standard practice to handcuff anyone suspected of a crime. They explained it’s to keep everyone safe, but it’s still tough to hear.
The sheriff even talked to the girl’s mom afterward. They’ve decided to change their policy so that parents will be notified whenever their kids are detained, even if it’s just for questioning.
The girl’s mom said her daughter is really shaken up. She doesn’t want to walk to school anymore, which is just so sad. That was her little bit of freedom.
As for the actual car thieves, three teenage boys were caught and charged, but the main suspect is still out there. It’s just a messy situation all around.
