West Heanton: This care home has made quite a name for itself! They’ve been shortlisted for the 2024 Lloyds British Business Excellence Awards.
Originally, they entered the sustainability category, but the judges were so impressed with their family history that they moved them to the Family Business of the Year category.
Tom Bond, the current owner, is the third generation in his family to run the place. It started as a small 12-bedroom home and has now expanded to 28 bedrooms, plus five sheltered housing apartments. They also run a community Day Centre and provide meals on wheels to over 80 people.
Tom’s grandparents, Sid and Phylis, opened West Heanton back in 1991 after struggling to find care for Tom’s great grandfather. Fast forward 33 years, and it’s now a well-respected care hub in the community.
A spokesperson mentioned that the award recognizes family businesses that show long-term vision, integrity, and a positive community impact. It’s all about being a great employer and growing sustainably.
Tom and his colleague Geoff were invited to London in September to present to the judges. The awards ceremony in November was a big deal, hosted by Anita Rani, with guest speakers like Tom Kerridge and Trinny Woodall.
They were up against some tough competition, but West Heanton was thrilled to be highly commended in the Family Business of the Year category.
Tom expressed his gratitude, saying, “We couldn’t have done it without our amazing team and the support of our wonderful West Heanton community.”
