Health Funds Urged to Revise Premium Proposals by Minister Butler
Health Minister Mark Butler has asked insurers to propose lower premium increases ahead of the April deadline to ease financial pressure on Australians

Canberra: Health Minister Mark Butler is back at it, telling private health insurers to rethink their proposed premium hikes. He’s not having any of the suggested increases, which were way too high for his liking.
This is the second time he’s shot down these proposals. The first round had increases of up to 6 percent, which is almost double the 3.03 percent increase set for 2024. That’s a big jump, and he’s not keen on it.
With an election coming up, this is a hot topic. Cost-of-living issues are front and center for many families, and Butler knows it. He’s pushing for any increases to be fair and justified.
He even reached out to all 29 insurers back in December, asking them to come up with something more reasonable. But from what he’s seen so far, he’s not ready to give the green light.
Butler’s been clear: he wants proposals that actually benefit Australian consumers. The pressure is on the insurers to come back with better numbers.
On the other side, Coalition health spokeswoman Anne Ruston is calling for more transparency. She wants households to get early warnings about any changes so they can budget properly.
Last year, many were caught off guard when the government delayed announcing the rise until after a key by-election. Ruston points out that over 14 million Australians are already feeling the pinch, and another hike would just add to their struggles.
