Honolulu: Hawaiian Airlines is making some tough decisions. They just laid off 61 noncontract workers as part of the ongoing merger with Alaska Air Group. This is the second round of layoffs, and it’s all tied to the recent acquisition.
The layoffs come after Alaska Air Group completed its $1.9 billion purchase of Hawaiian Holdings. It’s a big deal since it’s the first major airline merger in the U.S. since 2016. Hawaiian Airlines had about 1,300 noncontract workers, and some of them were in interim roles that are now ending.
Hawaiian’s spokesperson, Alex Da Silva, mentioned that while some jobs are being cut, most of the noncontract employees have found permanent or interim positions. They’re still needed to keep things running smoothly across the islands.
Earlier this year, Hawaiian Airlines had already announced layoffs for 57 workers in Hawaii and 16 from the mainland. They expect more changes as the integration continues, which could last until 2026.
Da Silva reassured that over 6,000 unionized positions are safe. The airline is committed to maintaining and even growing those jobs. They plan to hire hundreds of new employees in Hawaii, including pilots and flight attendants.
Governor Josh Green had expressed concerns about preserving union jobs during the merger discussions. He emphasized the importance of maintaining travel options and job security for residents.
For those affected by the layoffs, Hawaiian Airlines is encouraging them to apply for other positions within the company. They’re also offering support during this transition, including severance packages and job placement services.
As Hawaiian Airlines continues to grow, they’re investing in new aircraft and expanding their operations. They expect to receive more Boeing 787s soon, which will help them hire even more staff.
