Harlow, Essex, UK, Antidepressant, Overdose, Carving Fork
Harlow: A man named Alan Giles was jailed for stabbing two women. This happened in November 2019. He used a carving fork during the attack.
Giles, 71, received a 10-year sentence in May 2020. He was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm. He started his time at HMP Chelmsford, then moved to HMP Swaleside, and later to HMP Wayland.
On December 7, 2023, Giles died in prison. He overdosed on citalopram, an antidepressant. He was found unresponsive in his cell and was declared dead shortly after.
A review by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman stated there was no evidence of suicide risk. It seems he did not intentionally take too much medication.
During the attack, Giles knocked on the victims’ door. He pushed one woman aside and stabbed her multiple times. She suffered 16 puncture wounds. The other woman also got hurt in the chest.
Giles fled but was arrested later at home. Police found the carving fork in his sink. The investigating officer noted the women were lucky not to be more seriously injured.
