Carmarthenshire: Big news is coming from the council! They’re planning to invest a whopping £176 million over the next five years. This includes some exciting projects like improvements to Burry Port Harbour, a new school extension in Llanelli, and a care home in Gwendraeth Valley.

Most of the cash, nearly £92 million, is set for the first year, 2025-26. The harbour is getting a £2 million boost, especially since the last operator went bust. The council is chatting with Milford Haven Port Authority to find a new operator.

In Llanelli, Ysgol Bryngwyn is in line for an £8 million upgrade, while a new care home in Cwmgwili will get nearly £20 million. Plus, they’re planning to invest £16.7 million in cleaner, battery-powered refuse vehicles next year. Sounds like a step in the right direction!

There’s also a big focus on schools, with £62 million earmarked for new and upgraded facilities. Council leader Darren Price emphasized how crucial schools are for the community, especially after a review of special needs education in the area.

Of course, rising construction costs are a concern. Cllr Alun Lenny mentioned that these costs are limiting their ambitions a bit. But there’s still hope! The Towy Valley cycle path is expected to open in 2025, and plans to revamp Llanelli town center are in the works.

Funding for this massive plan will mainly come from the council itself, with some help from external sources. However, there’s still a small gap of £2.2 million that needs to be filled. Some projects are running behind schedule, with an estimated £38 million in delays. Fingers crossed they get everything back on track!
