Kansas City: You know those cozy Hallmark movies that just scream Christmas? Well, Keith Nielsen, the genius behind the costumes, has been making them even more magical. He’s worked on his eleventh Hallmark film this year, including titles like Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story and The Christmas Quest. His designs really bring the stories to life.
Nielsen’s work is inspired by a mix of stories and cultures. He’s created everything from stunning ballgowns to a Chiefs letterman jacket. He told Yahoo Canada that he loves a good challenge, especially when it comes to shaking up the usual Hallmark style.
When he first joined Hallmark, many thought the movies were made on a shoestring budget. Nielsen wanted to change that perception. He’s all about diversity in storytelling, even exploring time travel themes that let him flex his creative muscles. It’s exciting for him to see the audience’s reactions so quickly after finishing a project.
One of his favorite moments was designing a gown for Lacey Chabert in A Merry Scottish Christmas. He loves collaborating with her because they both aim to make each project unique. He’s all about incorporating elements from the story’s setting, which adds a special touch.
Nielsen is super resourceful too. Sometimes he buys pieces before the actors are even cast, and he’s great at making last-minute adjustments. He once whipped up a dress in just 36 hours! Talk about pressure!
He’s also made a personal mark on Hallmark films. After losing his grandmother, he included a little tribute in Touchdown, which is a sweet way to keep her memory alive.
Nielsen’s journey started with an internship on Mozart in the Jungle, and he’s learned a ton about multitasking in the fast-paced world of TV. His ultimate dream? Designing costumes for a major music tour, ideally for icons like Madonna or Lady Gaga. Fingers crossed they give him a call!
