Ottawa: A group that supports people with disabilities is sounding the alarm. They say the new federal disability benefit might not roll out on time. The promised payment date is July 1, but the government hasn’t approved the necessary regulations yet.

March of Dimes Canada is stepping up today with a campaign. They’re urging Persons with Disabilities Minister Kamal Khera to get moving on those regulations. They believe that if the government doesn’t act fast, it could hurt its reputation.

With Parliament on hold, Amanda MacKenzie from March of Dimes points out that a $243 million promise to help low-income individuals apply for the benefit is also in jeopardy. Opposition parties are ready to challenge the government at any moment.

MacKenzie emphasizes that people with disabilities are relying on this benefit starting July 1. A delay would be a huge disservice and a broken promise from the federal government.

The benefit is set to provide eligible individuals with up to $200 a month. While it’s not as much as many had hoped for, it’s still a lifeline for those struggling to pay rent and buy groceries.

Khera’s office reassures that the government is still working, even with Parliament prorogued, and they’re aiming to meet that July 1 deadline.
