Gretna Good Life District Passes Public Vote Despite Late Opposition
Gretna voters narrowly approved a key measure for a new tourist district

The mayor, Mike Evans, mentioned that the vote reflected some confusion about the project. He thinks they need to do a better job explaining things moving forward. He’s pretty optimistic about the potential for this area, especially since it’s right near the busy Interstate 80 and Highway 31.
Now, this good life district is a big deal because it could help the city collect some state sales tax money that’s been set aside for development. They’re looking at building all sorts of fun stuff like retail and entertainment venues. But here’s the kicker: they needed voter approval to get the ball rolling on this economic development program.
Interestingly, there’s been some drama with Rod Yates, the guy behind the project. He pulled his application just before the vote, which added some tension. The city turned down his latest proposal for a big youth sports campus, saying it was too risky for taxpayers. Yates, however, is still trying to get some new legislation to fund his vision.
Despite the hiccups, other developers are showing interest in the district. Evans is hopeful that they can still make something great happen, even without Yates. The Nebraska Department of Economic Development has said that Yates’ withdrawal doesn’t mean the district is off the table. They’ll be looking into whether the project can still move forward. It’s definitely a situation to keep an eye on!
