Greater Idaho movement asks Trump for his support

La Grande: The Greater Idaho movement is pushing for some eastern Oregon counties to join Idaho. They believe Idaho aligns better with their values.

Recently, the movement’s leaders reached out to President Trump for support. They think he could help bridge the political gap between the two states.

In a letter, they praised Trump as a problem-solver who could bring a peaceful resolution to the ongoing divide in Oregon. They’re hopeful he’ll respond soon.

Matt McCaw, the executive director, mentioned they haven’t heard back yet but are optimistic. He believes this idea is gaining traction.

Over the past few years, voters in 13 counties have shown interest in this shift. They want their county commissioners to discuss moving the border.

McCaw thinks a meeting with Trump or someone from his team could help get the ball rolling. He believes the people in both states want this change.

However, they face challenges. The Oregon Legislature and governor seem uninterested in these initiatives, which frustrates many residents.

Interestingly, while Trump lost Oregon overall, he won in the 13 counties involved in this movement. This shows a clear divide in political preferences.

Changing the border isn’t simple. It needs approval from both state legislatures and Congress. Some measures have been introduced but haven’t made much progress.

McCaw is hopeful that new proposals will come up in 2025. They’ve even reached out to Oregon’s governor for a meeting, but there’s been no response yet.

In a recent chat, the governor acknowledged the invitation but hasn’t decided on a meeting. She respects the voices of frustrated Oregonians and wants to keep the conversation going.

As of now, the governor’s office hasn’t commented on the situation. It’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds.
