Cleckheaton: A heartbreaking incident occurred when a 65-year-old great-grandmother lost her life after her mobility scooter went out of control.
Angela Carney was riding her scooter on September 26 when she crashed into a black Nissan Navara on the A643 Westgate. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she sadly succumbed to her injuries.
The inquest revealed that Angela accidentally set her scooter to freewheel mode, which prevented her from braking. She was going downhill on Westcliffe Road when she collided with the vehicle.
The driver of the Navara couldn’t avoid the crash, and Angela suffered severe chest injuries. Although her scooter was roadworthy, it lacked a fail-safe braking system for emergencies.
Witnesses said she had moved her scooter from her garden onto the footpath, activating the freewheel mode without realizing the danger. The coroner expressed concerns about the safety of older mobility scooters and called for better regulations.
Angela’s family shared their grief, saying she was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. They thanked everyone who supported them during this difficult time.
