Gilwern, Monmouthshire, Robert Price, Richard Cook, Assault, Pickaxe Handle
Gilwern: So, there was this shocking incident where a granddad got attacked with a pickaxe handle. It all started when Richard Cook had a heated argument with Robert Price’s wife. He was shouting at the grandkids playing outside, which really set things off.
Later that day, things escalated. Mr. Price was just chilling at home when he noticed the garage light on. He went to check it out and heard someone threatening him. Turns out, it was Cook, the same guy who had been harassing his wife earlier.
When Mr. Price confronted him, Cook went wild. He grabbed a pickaxe handle from the garden and started swinging it at Mr. Price. It was brutal—he hit him on the arm and then kept going, striking him on the head multiple times. It was a real frenzy.
Neighbors heard the commotion and rushed out to help, but Cook was still threatening to kill Mr. Price. It was terrifying. Eventually, they managed to get Mr. Price inside a neighbor’s house, but he was in pretty bad shape, covered in blood and with serious injuries.
He ended up in the hospital with multiple wounds, and the whole thing left him with lasting trauma. He’s been having nightmares and panic attacks since the attack, which has really affected his family too.
Cook was arrested and later claimed he didn’t remember much, but he eventually pleaded guilty to serious charges. The court heard he had a history of trouble, including past convictions. In the end, he got a sentence of over four years in prison, but he’ll only serve half of that before being released.
