Glasgow: The Hillwood Community Sports Hub is making big changes. They teamed up with students from Glasgow Clyde College to beautify a dull hill. The goal is to create a lovely space filled with shrubs and trees.

This hub opened in October 2024 and cost £1.8 million. It features four changing rooms, a multi-purpose hall, a kitchen, and both synthetic and grass pitches. These facilities are used by the Hillwood Boys Club football team, which has 300 players.

Willie Smith, the founder of the football team and the sports hub, shared his vision. He wants to create a place where people can enjoy walking, especially in summer. He believes this will encourage more people to get outside.

Willie grew up in the area and remembers how his mother would wave at people from the window. He wanted to change that feeling of isolation. Now, he’s making it happen.

Helen Corcoran, the development manager, echoed Willie’s thoughts. She wants the hub to be seen as more than just a football ground. It’s about community pride and bringing everyone together.

Last Thursday, students measured the area and will soon start designing plans. This process will take about six to ten weeks. Willie will choose his favorite design to inspire the new space.

Michelle McGuire, the curriculum manager for horticulture and floristry, praised Willie’s efforts. She believes this project will make the area more welcoming and beautiful.

Michelle also noted that the partnership benefits the students. They gain real-life experience and step out of their comfort zones. This project is a great opportunity for them to learn.

The students began working with the hub last year and planted 80kg of daffodils around the grounds. This collaboration is helping to create a vibrant community space.

The hub received funding from various organizations, including the Greater Pollok Barratt Community Development Trust and Glasgow City Council. This support aims to increase local opportunities for sports and recreation.
