Glasgow: The city is gearing up for a new pavement parking ban that kicks off on January 29. If drivers park on the pavement, they could face a £100 fine. Ouch!
This move is all about keeping pedestrians safe, especially those with mobility issues, the elderly, and parents with strollers. No one wants to be forced onto the road because of careless parking.
Along with the pavement ban, there will be stricter rules against double parking and blocking dropped kerbs. Initially, drivers will get warning notices to help them adjust to the new rules.
If you pay your fine within 14 days, it drops to £50. Councillor Angus Millar emphasized that pavement parking creates real dangers for vulnerable pedestrians and wheelchair users.
He pointed out that people with mobility challenges often struggle to navigate their neighborhoods due to these parking issues. Forcing them onto the road is just not right.
Double parking and blocking dropped kerbs also make it tough for drivers, leading to blocked roads and unsafe maneuvers. It’s a mess for everyone!
Back in 2021, the Scottish government gave local councils the power to ban pavement parking, and Glasgow is now stepping up to the plate.
Interestingly, Edinburgh was the first city in Scotland to enforce this ban, starting in January 2024, with Highland Council following soon after. London has had a similar ban since 1974.
In Glasgow, there won’t be any exemptions on streets with existing parking restrictions or those wide enough for emergency vehicles to pass safely.
There are some exceptions for emergency services, waste collection, and quick deliveries, but most streets will be assessed for further restrictions.
Glasgow City Council has even put together an interactive map to help drivers know where the rules apply. Councillor Millar encourages everyone to check the council’s website for updates on their street.
