Glasgow: A driver caused a serious crash that injured three friends but managed to avoid jail time. This happened on June 30, 2022, when Ramneek Sandhu, 23, hit a bus in Cowcaddens.
Sandhu was driving a BMW 116 and had picked up his friends for a dinner outing. But instead of heading straight to dinner, they decided to take a drive. His lawyer mentioned that the noise from the passengers distracted him.
As he approached Cowcaddens Road, he asked his friends to keep it down, but they didn’t. Unfortunately, he turned around to talk to them and lost focus on the road.
In a split second, he drifted into the adjacent lane and crashed into a bus that was stopped at a red light. Thankfully, the bus passengers were unharmed, but the crash caused Sandhu’s car to catch fire.
Three of his friends—Mohammed Sharif, Adeel Ahmed, and Subhan Waris—sustained serious injuries. Sharif ended up with a fractured pelvis, while Ahmed broke his arm. Waris had a nasty wound on his forehead and other injuries that left him scarred.
During the court hearing, it was revealed that Sandhu also got hurt in the crash. He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury through careless driving.
Interestingly, he had received speeding points shortly after the incident. His lawyer mentioned that his friendship with those injured is now over, and he’s currently working as an engineering apprentice.
The judge, Sheriff Tom Hughes, decided to give Sandhu a structured deferred sentence to see if he can turn his life around. They’ll check in on his progress in April.
