Gilston: The Hunsdon, Eastwick and Gilston Neighbourhood Plan Group (HEGNPG) is stepping up to represent residents after East Herts Council approved plans for 10,000 new homes. This includes 8,500 homes from Places for People and 1,500 from Taylor Wimpey, along with major transport infrastructure.

Anthony Bickmore, the chair of HEGNPG, shared that this development poses a big challenge for the local communities. He emphasized the group’s commitment to ensuring the project aligns with community values, especially sustainable development.

They’ve worked hard to create an award-winning Neighbourhood Plan, which the community overwhelmingly supported. Now, they’re focused on advocating for high standards in urban design and timely infrastructure while keeping environmental concerns in mind.

Bickmore mentioned that the group will keep a close eye on future planning applications and master plans for the new villages. They want to make sure these plans meet the standards set in their Neighbourhood Plan.

They’re also dedicated to protecting green spaces, ensuring biodiversity, and promoting balanced communities with affordable housing. The goal is to maintain the unique character of each village while fostering a sense of community.

As they move forward, the HEGNPG plans to monitor agreements related to infrastructure and affordable housing. They recognize that while the development is inevitable, their role is to be the voice of the residents, holding developers accountable for their promises.

Ultimately, they hope to keep the development in line with the community’s vision, ensuring it adapts to future needs. If done right, both the new and existing communities can thrive together, which is what everyone wants to see.
