San Francisco: If there was any doubt, the generative AI bubble did not burst in 2024. Investments in this space, which includes all sorts of AI tools and apps, hit a whopping $56 billion last year. That’s a huge jump from 2023, when investors put in $29.1 billion.
This new record is impressive, showing a 192% increase in funding. Big names like OpenAI and Anthropic are still pulling in major investments and rolling out new products. It seems like the excitement around generative AI is just getting started.
In the last quarter of 2024 alone, deal values skyrocketed to $31.1 billion. Some of the biggest rounds included Databricks’ $10 billion Series J and OpenAI’s $6.6 billion round. It’s clear that investors are all in on this technology.
Interestingly, mergers and acquisitions made up a small part of the funding, totaling $951 million. Companies like Google and Microsoft have been busy hiring talent and licensing technology, which shows they’re keen to stay ahead in the game.
Most of the funding went to U.S. companies, with only $6.2 billion going to startups outside the country. However, there were some notable exceptions, like Moonshot AI in Beijing and Mistral in France, which also secured significant investments.
Looking ahead to 2025, there are concerns about the market becoming oversaturated. With so many startups popping up in similar areas, it might be tough for them to stand out. For instance, four companies focused on AI coding assistants each raised over $100 million last year.
As investors start to demand more revenue growth, the sustainability of this trend could be in question. Plus, the high costs of keeping up with the latest tech might be a hurdle for many startups.
On the bright side, companies that provide the infrastructure for generative AI are thriving. Data center startups like Crusoe and Lambda had some of the largest funding rounds in 2024. Investment firm KKR even predicts that global spending on data centers will reach $250 billion a year due to the rising demand for AI support.
