Glasgow: This weekend, about 1,200 furries will gather at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Organizers are taking special measures to ensure everyone behaves appropriately.
Attendees are reminded not to discriminate based on species. They are also warned against displaying artwork that depicts inappropriate themes, like “cub porn” or bestiality.
The Scotiacon organizers acknowledge that some rules can be tricky. For example, characters that look very childlike may be seen as children under their guidelines.
The code of conduct emphasizes that harassment of any kind is unacceptable. This includes discrimination based on race, gender, sexuality, or even the species of someone’s fursona.
The event started in 2011 with just a few attendees. Last year, it attracted 1,170 furries. Tickets range from £45 a day to £480 for a package with hotel stay.
Two years ago, Scotiacon coincided with a feminist rally in Glasgow. Some attendees left to join a counter-protest, which received support from a local minister.
This year’s code of conduct also prohibits certain types of artwork. No bestiality or zoophilia is allowed, and toilet-related activities are discouraged.
Delegates are advised against wearing fetish gear, like jockstraps or revealing costumes. However, some accessories, like dog collars, are permitted if used innocently.
Species dysphoria has gained attention recently. Some students identify as animals, including wolves and foxes. Reports indicate that at least one child in Aberdeen has been recognized for this.
