London: The Silvertown Tunnel is gearing up to open in April, and it’s got some tolls for drivers. This 1.4km tunnel aims to ease traffic and improve air quality in the city.

Originally proposed back in 2012 and given the green light in 2018, it’s stirred up some debate. Many locals are upset, claiming Mayor Sadiq Khan is making it too pricey to use, with some facing charges of up to £10 per trip. The project, costing £2.2 billion, is funded through a Private Finance Initiative, meaning tolls will help pay off the debt.

But here’s the good news: residents in certain boroughs can snag discounts. These deals also apply to the Blackwall Tunnel, which will start charging once the Silvertown Tunnel opens.

So, if you live in one of the 12 East and South East boroughs or the City of London, you could get a 50% discount. Plus, small businesses and charities in Tower Hamlets, Newham, and Greenwich can enjoy a £1 discount on off-peak charges for at least a year.

And if you’re wondering who gets a free pass, all buses, coaches, and vehicles with nine or more seats registered with the DVLA won’t have to pay. Taxis, blue badge holders, and certain NHS staff and patients are also exempt.
