Greater Manchester: New stats have come out showing how long patients are waiting for ambulance handovers at hospitals. It’s not looking good, to say the least.
Last week, nearly 2,000 handovers took over 30 minutes. That’s a long time when you’re in need of urgent care. The data was put together by the PA news agency from NHS England’s reports.
Across England, A&E departments have been swamped, especially during December. The NHS is really feeling the strain this winter, and it’s affecting patient care.
Almost half of the patients arriving at major A&E departments waited more than four hours to be seen. That’s just crazy! It’s been reported that some seriously ill patients were stuck outside hospitals for over an hour.
During the festive season, one in every 14 ambulance patients had to wait over an hour before getting admitted. That’s just not right.
Looking at the numbers, trusts like Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust had a staggering 59.6% of handovers taking longer than 30 minutes. Other trusts like Stockport and Tameside are also struggling with similar issues.
Professor Sir Stephen Powis from the NHS has pointed out that hospitals are under immense pressure right now. The cold weather and flu season are making things even tougher.
He praised the NHS staff for their hard work and dedication, saying they’re doing everything they can to help patients despite the overwhelming demand. It’s a tough time for everyone involved.
As we move through this busy winter, it’s crucial to only call 999 or go to A&E for life-threatening emergencies. For other health issues, using NHS 111 or visiting your local GP is the way to go.
