Alice Springs: Big news for drivers in the Northern Territory! Starting today, over 100,000 folks can renew their driver’s licences for free. This is a real win for many who are feeling the pinch with rising costs.
The territory’s treasurer, Bill Yan, shared this exciting update with the media. He mentioned that from January 1st until June, anyone renewing their licence will automatically get a 12-month discount. How cool is that?
If you’re not due for a renewal this year, don’t worry! You can still pop into the motor vehicle registry or use MVR Quickpay to snag that extra year for free.
Bill talked about how this decision came from listening to the community. Many people are still struggling with the ongoing cost of living crisis, and this move aims to help ease some of that burden.
It’s part of a bigger plan by the local government to shake things up with road-related fees, especially with local elections coming up. They’re also freezing registration fees for cars, motorbikes, and trailers until July 2026.
Queenslanders are getting a similar deal, with registration fees for light vehicles and caravans being reduced by 20% to help ease financial pressures.
There are also some other changes coming in 2025 for drivers across the country. For example, Victoria is looking to let younger drivers hit the road sooner, while NSW is trialing a new rule for P-platers to use their phones as GPS while driving.
In South Australia, they’re planning to introduce a bill that will allow e-scooters and other personal mobility devices to be used legally on roads and public areas. Exciting times ahead!
