Peterhead: A former prison officer, Russell Maitland, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for some truly awful crimes. He admitted to raping a young girl and sexually assaulting another in the north-east of Scotland.

Maitland, 37, committed these acts in Peterhead and Aberdeen. The judge made it clear that the impact on the victims was severe, describing the situation as having “life-changing consequences.” It’s heartbreaking to think about what these young girls have gone through.

During the court proceedings, Maitland appeared via video link from prison. The judge, Alan Summers, didn’t hold back in his criticism, calling the crimes “almost unimaginably depraved.” He also mentioned that Maitland would be monitored for three years after his release.

Maitland had worked at HMP Grampian in Peterhead, but he was suspended during the investigation. The Scottish Prison Service acknowledged the lasting impact of such crimes on survivors.

Katrina Parkes, the procurator fiscal for high court sexual offences, emphasized the bravery of the victims in coming forward. She stated that justice has been served, and it’s crucial for anyone affected by similar crimes to seek help. They will be listened to and supported in their pursuit of justice.
