North Shields: So, the planning committee in North Tyneside just gave the green light to turn an old ceramics studio into a micropub called the Tipsy Pig. This decision came even though some locals weren’t too happy about it.
Last night, the councillors approved the change for 12A Russell Street. They had already given the place a premises license back in November, but there were petitions asking them to reconsider both the licensing and planning applications.
In total, 46 people signed a petition against the micropub, worried about noise and how it might affect the neighborhood. One resident, Tara Alisandatos, voiced these concerns during the meeting.
On the flip side, the planning documents from the applicant said the noise from the bar, including background music, would only hit a max of 60 decibels. Still, the officers recommended moving forward, saying any soundproofing issues could be sorted out before the bar opens.
Interestingly, there was also a petition in support of the micropub with 148 signatures, highlighting it as a potential community hub. The council’s report concluded that this micropub would be a good use of the vacant space and would help boost the local economy.
The new bar plans to open from 10 am to 10 pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. They’ll serve alcohol from 10 am to 9:30 pm on weekdays and until 10:30 pm on weekends.
After hearing from both sides, the planning committee voted unanimously in favor of the micropub. It looks like North Shields is getting a new spot to grab a drink!
