Melbourne: It’s a sad day as we learn that Kevin Andrews, the former defence minister and a long-time member of the Liberal Party, has passed away at 69. His family shared the news, saying he died with his wife Margie by his side.

Kevin had been fighting cancer for about a year. His family expressed pride in his service to the country and the community, but they’re heartbroken over his loss.

He was a dedicated man, always working on projects, even up until the end. They mentioned he was writing his memoirs, which they hope to publish after his passing.

For three decades, Kevin represented the Menzies seat in Melbourne’s east. He held several important cabinet roles during the Howard and Abbott governments, making a mark in the party.

He was known for his conservative views and served in various ministerial roles, including defence and immigration. He was a key player in the Liberal Party’s right wing.

Born in Sale, Victoria, he moved to Melbourne to study law. Before diving into politics, he worked as a barrister and even served as an associate at the Supreme Court.

Kevin entered politics in 1991, winning a by-election for Menzies, and he held that seat for 31 years. He made headlines back in 1996 with the Andrews Bill, which limited euthanasia laws in the ACT and Northern Territory.

As a minister, he pushed through some controversial laws, including a citizenship test and the WorkChoices industrial relations package, which faced a lot of backlash.

He was a staunch supporter of traditional family values and opposed issues like abortion and same-sex marriage. He married Margie in 1979 and was a devoted Catholic.

After losing a pre-selection battle in 2022, he retired, marking a significant moment as it was the first time a sitting federal Liberal MP was unseated in Victoria in over 30 years.

Kevin Andrews will be remembered as a dedicated public servant who always aimed to make a difference. Rest in peace, Kevin.
